My Top 7 Essentials for Spring

Hi, friends!

It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve written to you all here. How is April treating you? There’s something different about this year’s spring season that I haven't been able to pinpoint yet. All I know is whatever it is, I like it. It’s been a sweet spring so far. I hope you’ve been able to say the same and, if not, maybe this is a good reminder to do that spring cleaning you’ve been meaning to do. Spring cleaning doesn’t just refer to decluttering your home. Decluttering your home and your mind will help you relax more and enjoy this season.

When I think of spring, I think of new beginnings, early morning walks, cherry blossoms blooming, iced lattes in mason jars — oh, and a fresh, new wardrobe. In the fashion world, spring is an exciting time for wardrobe transition. Depending on where you live, spring means you get to put away the weight of winter layers and boots in exchange for light floral dresses and open-toe flats. And, if you’re a glam gal like me, then spring also means that you’ve traded out the bold, darker shades (like burgundy, crimson, and black) on your nails and lips for the softer, brighter beauty faves (like coral, mauve, and pink).

Because there’s something extra special about this spring, I’ve decided to switch things up a bit and make my wardrobe a little extra special too. This spring, I encourage you to try on something you’ve never worn before and make this season different than the last. To help you out, I’ve listed my top 7 essentials for spring 2017 below! To make it even sweeter, I’ve listed where you can find all the items for under $100!

Enjoy, babes :)

1. a straw hat

A straw hat is the perfect accessory to top off any spring-time outfit—whether you’re off to brunch in a floral maxi or an afternoon picnic in your cutoffs and favorite tee.

2. a soft pink lipstick

Just the right amount of color on your lips to complete your daytime look or keep your evening glam subtle.

3. embroidery cut offs

You don’t have to wait for summer just to pull your denim shorts back out. This season the attention is all in the details—embroidered and distressed are the ultimate duos to look for.

4. a shoulder bag

The shoulder bag has yet to be retired and for good reason. A bag that is hands-free allows for more fun to happen, like holding your iced latte while strolling through the farmer’s market on a Saturday morning.

5. a bandana

Other than this being the cutest accessory of all, the bandana is so versatile. Wear it loosely around the neck, tight like a choker, or around your locks to spice up that ponytail.

6. a pair of espadrilles

The best pair of sandals you’ll wear this season. Period. Enough sophistication and class for any outing. I have a feeling this will be a staple for spring and summer 2018 too.

7. a floral print dress

Because what is spring without a floral dress? It’s simply not.

I’d love to know how you’ve been enjoying spring so far and what’s on your essentials list! Comment in the box below.

Cozy Sweater Sunday

My best friend is moving to India tomorrow so I went shopping in his closet this weekend. It’s currently summer there so contrary to living in the bay area, there won’t be much need for warm, cozy sweaters. Since I’ve been on such a men’s clothing hype, I was pretty excited to borrow this piece in particular. Even through Spring, oversized sweaters are still a great go-to on colder, rainy days. Match this sweater with a pair of Zella high-waisted leggings, block heels and a dad cap; you’ve got a match made in fashion heaven where cozy meets classy - classy enough for a Sunday in church.

After service, I had the longest intercessor’s team meeting of my life. But, being a part of this powerful prayer group is one my biggest blessings. Following two hours of prayer, we spent time at our favorite spot with some of my favorite people. A Sunday with friends like these and places like Trouble Coffee makes for a solid end to a wonderful weekend. I am so full of gratitude.

Also, currently listening to "Lost Boy" by Ruth B while writing about this "Lost" sweater. Totally not intentional. Link below for your listening pleasure.

Outfit details are at the bottom. Enjoy these photos first and let me know what you think in the comment box.

I pray you have a week full of love, friendship and cozy sweaters.

Love love love…

Denim On Demin

I'm breaking all the rules that my mom ever told me about not wearing denim with denim. Sorry, mama. Times have changed and honestly, when it comes to fashion, I'm just an advocate for self-expression - but with taste and class first and foremost.

This past Sunday was a fun-filled day. After church we found a really awesome gem in North Oakland called Tesmescal Alley. Bunch of cute shops, hipster coffee and vegan ice cream. Also, the best smelling horticultural shop ever - Crimson Hort. I absolutely love green plants and soy candles.

Afterwards, we headed over to my nephew's 2nd birthday party. Isn't he the cutest little peanut?! His favorite words are balloon, Elmo and Amen! We think he's the next "Pint-Sized Preacher."

Anyway, outfit details below...

Love,

Accessories really can make or break your outfit. I love this Spring time pouch from Rebecca Minkoff. It's such a fun shape and size. It fits everything except my phone - cards, keys, lip gloss, love notes ;) It's from last year's collection, but anything with fringe is a must this season.. like this Fallen Phone Crossbody bag

Bare Back in All Black

It really warms my heart to be able to spend more quality time with friends yesterday. After all, Jesus was all about relationships and He still is. After church, we had a lunch picnic at Lake Merritt before heading back to Trouble Coffee for more hipster shenanigans. One of my besties is moving to India so we enjoyed dinner and music at Drake's Dealership in Oakland. My sister and I shared the black bean burger and 3 Row salad with flank steak. So good.

Any way, I was so happy to be able to put away the boots and long sleeves in exchange for this backless jumpsuit. Mine is from last spring's collection but here's a similar one at Urban Outfitters. It is perfect for super warm days and can be covered effortlessly with this oversized sweater from Brandy Melville. I love the straw look for spring and summer but I'm still a fan of the wool hats at least until May. Here's a super cute wide brim straw hat from Forever 21

Sending you love this week.

Jean Jackets & Espressos

Hi friends :)

Yesterday was such a fun day. I decided Sunday is better spent with family. I mentioned last week how diverse my church is and here you can visually experience that truth. It reminds me that our God doesn't see color or differences. We are all His beloved children. And truly, His love brings unity in some of the most diverse places.

What a gift to have friends who you can call family. And it's so vital to have such people in your life to help you sustain and grow in your faith walk. People who will laugh with you, pray for you and love you right where you are in every season. Also people who will drink coffee in hipster cafes and post boomerangs on Instagram until your phone dies :)

Overall, Sunday reminds me that being a Christian is just fun. It's so much more than that, but it is so much fun.

Enjoy these photos of my beautiful brothers and sisters. Then scroll below to see outfit deets of course.

Love love love!

Before we had coffee at Trouble in West Oakland, we had lunch on Grand Ave and stopped at the best flower shop Brother & Sisters Flower Shop. I am obsessing over all things hipster, my mauve thermal from H&M and Cafe Con Panna (just order it for yourself at Trouble).

Boots: DSW

Jeans: Topshop

Thermal: H&M Men's Section - Not the exact one I'm wearing, but close enough. The men's section has really been my go to lately.

Happy Sunday, lovelies!

Wasn't today simply beautiful? I've been so happy to see the sun the last couple days.

After church, we had a prayer team meeting and I wish I took photos so you guys can see the amount of love that was present. It was the greatest part of my day. One of the many things I love about my church is how diverse it is. People of all background, cultures and experiences. It's the most beautiful thing to witness such a group of people gather and pray together. That's the thing about being a Jesus follower, it doesn't matter who you are, we will always have this One thing in common - His love. His love can bring unity in the most diverse places.

Prayer lasted for about another hour and by then I was ready to eat lunch. Lemonade is one of my favorite places to eat. The choices are fairly healthy and the food is ready to eat immediately. Not to mention their sugar-free cucumber mint lemonade is super refreshing! I got to enjoy time with my sissy and our new friend, Mondy. Mondy is originally from Tennessee, has only been in SF for 6 months and came to our church just two weeks ago! It was such a fun day with these two ladies.

Enjoy the photos below and keep scrolling for outfit deets!

Meet Mondy! She's an ambitious and brave young woman with a pure and beautiful heart.

Hi, sissy!

Hi, sissy!

Okay you guys, I am kind of obsessing over this shade of blue on my lips. For one, blue is my favorite color and two, the shade happens to be considered a "deep sapphire" and sapphires are my favorite gemstone! Also, I did enjoy today's outfit because it was so comfortable and still made me feel like I was put together (I couldn't do the heels today because my last leg day really killed me!) Lastly, if you saw my IG post on this outfit, you saw my caption. I wasn't the only one wearing all black today and it was kind of cool that a lot of us showed up to church today like it was planned. But it wasn't. We're just cool. Or so I like to think ;)

Lips: Who's Zoomin' Who (Matte Deep Sapphire) by Too Faced

Neck: I got these set from H&M but you could also do a cool layering effect with these here: H&M

Vegan Leather Jacket: mine is currently sold out, so similar and less expensive one is here: Nordstrom

Topshop Black Tunic Tee: Similar one here: Nordstrom

I feel like you can get black ripped jeans just about anywhere now. Mine are also Nordstrom Topshop. Shoes are also sold out but I looove these ones by Jeffrey Campbell at Urban Outfitters

Have a blessed week, dear friends!

Tuxedo Vibes

Happy Sunday!

On my way to church this morning I was thinking about why people would dress up for Sunday service. I know that years before, it was a religious standard for men and women to dress a certain way. Nowadays, people come to church dressed up and dressed down. It's a come as you are kind of thing and I love that. Church isn't about religious standards but first and foremost a place where God's love is found. The fact that you can show up to church just as you are and be welcomed just as you are spells L-o-v-e to me!

Then of course, I asked myself why I personally decide to dress up for church now (I was once the girl who mainly dressed down, keeping it cute and cas'!). And actually, if I shared it all here, it would be too much. So, stay tuned for future post on faith and fashion and why I believe in the merging of both. In the mean time, let's just say my main reason is Jesus. I get up and put my very best together on Sunday because I love Jesus and I can't wait to meet Him at church.

Just think of all the times when you date someone, how much effort you put in to getting ready and putting yourself together all for another human being (especially on the first couple dates). But if God is our everything, how much more should we put that effort to present ourselves in such a way that reflects what He has done for us, how He has transformed and healed us and how He makes us new each and everyday. I mean, seriously!

Any way, keep scrolling to find out where to get similar pieces for this Tuxedo-inspired look!

I was following a couple of my favorite style bloggers during their time at NYFW and one of the styles I fell in love with is the classic white button-up look. How timeless has this piece been in many of our own closets? White button-up shirts are so versatile and easily can tie your whole outfit together in a stylish and sophisticated way. I chose to wear mine to complete my otherwise all-black outfit and turn it into a female version tuxedo.

Outfit deets:

This black bomber has been my go-to since I bought it on my birthday last March. I found it at one my favorite shops in the city from Denim & Soul on Union St.

You have also seen these vegan leather leggings and black booties from December's Velour & Velvet post.

I literally use this Marc Jacobs Nylon Biker Backpack nearly everyday. It has lasted me all winter season and I am not the most gentle when it comes to bags. I have filled this thing nearly to the brim with my laptop, study bible, change of gym clothes and post work out snacks! Not only is it super cute and stylish but it's very practical too.

And the white button-up was actually my dad's :) but you can find one here at H&M. I prefer men's because even as the shorty that I am, I like longer coverage - especially for church.

Red lips is Ruby Woo from MAC. Any red lip liner will do, just make sure you use one ;)

Til we meet again, loves!

Blue Hues

Hope you're having a great weekend, friends!

I'm just enjoying another simple Sunday. Blue happens to be one of my favorite colors so I was excited to wear some hues of blue accented with a few of my favorite black pieces. The dress was warm, cozy yet appropriate for church. I love how it fits my petite body but doesn't overly accentuate. It makes me feel feminine yet classy.

Outfit details below!

Superbowl Sunday

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!

I'm not a huge football fan, but I do like to recognize national events like this one. I appreciate American sports because it is in this industry that we have defined and developed our culture. And having culture is so important.

Every year on Super Bowl Sunday we celebrate a little extra because my sister's birthday is usually on this day or near the same day. This year we celebrated her 24th in the beautiful city of Walnut Creek.

After church, we drove up with a group of our girlfriends to one of our favorite restaurants: True Foods Kitchen. I love this place for it's sustainable ingredient choices and the fun atmosphere. It's right in the middle of the Broadway Plaza so there is tons of great shopping and other fun things to do post-lunch! My recommendation is to go during brunch so you have all the options of both the comfort foods of a perfect morning and the cravings of afternoon lunch.

Below you will find details on my outfit and what I ate :)

Velour & Velvet

It was Christmas sweater Sunday at church today. So, I chose a very festive oversized burgundy piece. No one said it had to be ugly... *shrugs*

But hey, did you know there is a difference between velour and velvet? It's okay, most people don't and up until recently, I didn't either. Scroll down to find out which piece I'm wearing is velour and which one is velvet.

After church, we went to visit my aunt who lives in the Portola District of San Francisco. I think this is such an awesome area because I love how much history is here. Just appreciating the old asphalt paving the streets and the homes of original San Franciscans reminds me of the unique beauty of my favorite city.

This is one of my favorite outfits so far. This over-sized sweater is super cozy and warm. And the rest of the outfit, including the booties are so comfortable. After visiting auntie, we went Christmas shopping and I was so thankful to be able to go through my whole day without any discomfort.

Below are a some different places to buy similar pieces.
